Rega's Bias 2 cartridge, unlike the Rega Carbon, is made in-house at the Rega factory. It's the entry level cartridge amongst the similar family trio of Rega Bias 2, Elys 2, and Exact Cartridges.
At the Rega factory each Bias 2 cartridge are built with a pair of parallel wound coils carefully assembled on custom jigs to create a working stereo generator assembly. Once assembled each Bias 2 spends two days of rigorous testing and quality control verification before finally being granted permission for fitment into a Rega Turntable or offered as a stand-alone cartridge.
The Bias 2 is one of our favorite cartridges to put on both Rega and non-Rega turntables. The reason for this is the British sound that it brings combined with a relatively low cost of entry and a remarkably high output. The 6.8 Mv (Millivolt) output of the Bias 2 means that its motor produces a good deal of electrical current which in turn means that the table will work better with an inexpensive phono stage because said phono stage has less amplification to do than if the cartridge had a lower output of say 3-4 Mv.
For Rega turntables, it comes stock on the Rega Planar 2. We feel the Rega Bias 2 is a good match sonically and economically for the Rega Planar 1, Planar 2, Planar 3, and even the Planar 6 if you find yourself wishing to economize and a heavy user of cartridges.
For other tables, we sometimes put these on older lower-cost Linn LP12 or Axis tables or tables where the owner is seeking a little warmer British sound with good PRAT and punch in the bass. This is also a very forgiving cartridge, so if your tonearm is older, slightly abused, or cheap, the Bias 2 handles wobbly bearings better than most due to its forgiving profile, warm sound, and high output. The high output aids a bit in masking low level hum and noise.
The expected lifetime of a Rega Bias is around 1200 hours of play but this can vary somewhat. If you start to hear distortion in the upper music range - violins, soprano voices, then it's time to have the cartridge replaced or professionally evaluated for wear condition.
