Delivering top-of-the-line sound in a more compact design, the La Scala AL5 is the only other fully horn-loaded speaker in the Heritage series, besides the legendary Klipschorn.
Why would you buy the Klipsch La Scala AL5? Two words: bass horn. The Klipsch Heresy IV, Forte IV & Cornwall IV all have horn loaded tweeters and a midrange with conventional bass drivers. The La Scala AL5 & Klipschorn have horn loaded bass drivers as well - that big wood box below has a woofer that fires into a big folded horn, producing much more dynamic bass. See cutaway in picture carousel.
The La Scala AL5 is a big speaker yes, but it's also the smallest fully-loaded horn Klipsch Heritage loudspeaker. If you want the huge dynamic impact that is truly a hallmark of a Klipsch, the fully horn loaded models are the way to go. Get a Klipschorn if you have a lot of room, want the biggest bass, and have corners to put them into - sometimes Klipschorns are referred to as Corner Horns. If you want a more living room friendly speaker, and one that doesn't go in a corner, get a La Scala AL5.
The fairly unique benefit of a folded-horn speaker is that they can produce huge forceful bass from a low wattage amplifier, a tube amplifier if you wish. A McIntosh MC275 tube amp lights them up like cannons on the 4th of July.
The Downside? Well it's a good sized speaker, and you need to have the front to back depth available in your room to make them work. You also need to be a person who likes your speaker to have an enormous jump factor and bass drive - one would not describe the La Scala AL5 as a shy loudspeaker.
